Art and Music Collide
Tampa artist Dawn Hunt is rockin’ the art world. Inspired by music and lyrics, she creates art that challenges the emotions of her audience and the limits of her materials, all while continually pushing the boundaries of her skills. Dawn is well acquainted with the increasingly popular LIVE art platform and just as comfortable painting on the stage as she is in the studio. Recent appearances include Nude Nite, the Gasparilla International Film Festival, Pepin Distributing Brews with Attitude Live Art Competition, Power Stories Theatre Annual Gala, and The Gasparilla Festival of the Arts. Her work is gritty, edgy and layered with meaning and metaphors.

Q: What do you enjoy about the LIVE art platform? How is it different from working in your studio.
A: I love the performance aspect of LIVE art. I feed off of the energy of the audience and find the process exhilarating. What I produce on stage and what I produce in my studio are very different. When working LIVE, I am creating a piece from start to finish in a very short period of time, so I have to trust my intuition and make very fast decisions. What I might see as a mistake in the studio might turn out to be a small gift when creating on stage. In the studio, I am fastidious and spend weeks, months and sometimes years on one piece. I see both venues as valuable for constantly pushing my skills and challenging myself.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your creative process? Where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
A: My work tends to be a fusion of a subject-- a person who I find beautiful and holds some sort of intrigue or mystery for me-- and music. I explore this mystery through song and lyric in an attempt to shed light on what it is that shines through them from the inside out and makes them so attractive to me. Layered on top of that is a statement I wish to make about how our society might perceive this form of beauty. It’s a complicated way of negating that which I am indulging.

Q: What are you currently working on? What’s on the horizon for you?
A: I am currently working on a new series of mixed media portraits. ‘She was Made To Blow You Away’ and ‘Ruination Day’ are two of the pieces from this series. I’m planning to show this series in some pretty exciting places like New York and LA, and I’m currently looking for a local venue where my kind of edgy style is a good fit with the gallery owner’s vision. I will continue doing LIVE art shows and, as usual, I’m busy with commissioned pieces.

Q: You do a lot of commission work. Some artists refuse to do commission work at all. Is this something you enjoy doing?
A: I am completely charged by the creative collaboration and the process that takes place when I embark on a client-based project. The challenge that a client brings offers me the opportunity to create a new way of approaching an artistic endeavor and challenge myself. I have a kind of a knack for understanding what’s in a client’s mind and helping them to find a vision they didn’t even know existed. I also listen carefully to the words being said and try to envision the BIG picture. And I always attempt to integrate the vast knowledge of methods from over 15 years of making art and large installations
