A Letter From The Author | Madelaine Basulto
Many of you don’t know who I am, quite frankly I just found out. I am Madelaine Basulto Paredes, the author of Mariah’s Memoirs Stolen Tears, a romance novel based in the Bronx. The character, Mariah, is a young girl who is afraid of everything and everyone because of the uncanny and twisted events that happened to her over the course of her life. Many of you will ask why did I write this story. I have no explanation as to tell you this is a story about me, and what happened...
I disguised tragic events in a romance I longed for during the time of those experiences. Not realizing I wanted an escape of reality. As a young girl I always wrote in diaries. Expressing what I felt and where I wish I were. Eight years ago I grabbed a notebook, because it’s the only thing I buy the most, and started to write. At the time I lived with my father and I worked at his store. I was finally free of mishaps but I was alone. I thought I would start writing about things that were going on but instead I dove deep in to my past and created my story this way.
I wrote as if I were picturing or reading someone else’s book. Through everyone there is a story. Why would mine be so important? I only leave that up to you as a reader. I feel I can touch many women with this book. Those few I was close to only know who I was at that time. People would ask what success would I like with this book and I am torn by the true response. Of course I would love to see it go big but in reality, I want to give young girls and boys, young teens, and women a voice. The voice I never had.
I didn’t change the voice in this book from the time I wrote it and I feel I may get criticize for it later on. You can imagine what type of response I would have for it. This is an accomplishment I never thought of going for sporadically. I didn’t want to change anything because it is all I encountered during my adolescents. Maybe it could have been the scenery or maybe it was just the people. I only warn you that it is graphic.
I decided to publish the book out of impulse in October. I moved back and forth looking at this huge hard cover, blue and white pages. Now, I can say it’s for me to dedicate its success to my father, who just passed away this January. Because of him dragging me to Florida, I was able to write and actually go about doing something with it. Because of him, I met my Jonathan, in real life. I met all the characters. It’s my own bible. What worries me now is the ending…
- I live for my family.
Q: Is there a second part to the story?
A: Yes, Labyrinth of Tears, the second part will be out soon.
Q: Will there be more books?
A: Yes, and ill give you a hint. “Our Last Dance”
Q: What inspired you to write this book?
A: True-life events inspired me. It all came easy to write when you are speaking of something that had an impact in your life.
Q: Can you tell us about the book?
A: The book is about a young girl growing up in Bronx, NY. Her neighbor and her fall in love and as time passes she begins to discover true-life events that trigger these recurring dreams in her. Through love and desperation she uncovers who she truly is.
Q: Do you have any advice for writers?
A: Keep writing. Even if it seems insignificant it is not because you wrote it. If your passion is to write, then WRITE.
