'Tampa Music Spotlight' Series Ft. Mister Nik Sharp (Write-Up/Q&A/Pics)

“I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.”

-Frank Sinatra

Who is Mister Nik Sharp? According to solo artist, and the man behind the mask, he’s "Half Greek and half awesome." If there’s one thing Nik Sharp is awesome at, it’s his innate ability to write a hook. The kind of catchy hooks you’ll find yourself humming days later.

Sharp is no novice to the music scene, he spent years as the front man of Palm Harbor, Florida's rock band Suburban Tragedy. During his time with the alternative group, the band developed a cult like following, entertained crowds of thousands, sold thousands of albums, had songs featured on MTV’s the real world, and a number one rock song, "Epitome of Me" on the Tampa Bay airwaves.

After being burned one too many times by the politics of the music industry, Sharp turned to the world of business. As an entrepreneur, he dropped off the map for two years, not writing any new songs and focused on building a successful boutique marketing and printing company. He went from writing rock hits to selling products for national chains. “To be successful in business you have to have a product that people want to buy, and be someone they want to buy it from, a lot like the music industry.”

So how did Nik Sharp make his triumphant return to music? It was in part thanks to his best friend and music producer, Ross Lara. Lara has topped K Pop charts and worked with some of the biggest names in the industry.  One afternoon Lara sent Sharp some electro tracks. Being the powerhouse of vocals and catchy hooks that he is, Sharp couldn’t resist making them his own by laying down some lyrics. Inspired and re-focused on his passion, Nik began writing his own songs / vocals and sent them to multi-platinum, Nashville executive producer, Richard Williams. Discoverer of talents such as Paramore and Cage the Elephant, Williams was impressed by what he heard, offering Nik a publishing deal for a chance to write hits for the newest up and coming talent. But Sharp wasn’t ready to settle. “I love entertaining, I love the feeling I get from a crowd, the energy and I’m an entertainer not just a songwriter. That is my passion.” Williams went on to offer him a record deal, but after being jaded by the industry, Sharp wanted to do things on his own terms, which led to the creation of Danger Us, Williams and Sharps independent record label. The first release of the fledgling label is Mister Nik Sharp’s highly anticipated EP, “Let’s Give it to the Girls.”

“What I loved about making this record, was that for the first time, I didn’t need to worry about what genre I was trying to fit into or what a record company thought. I got to do and create whatever I wanted. This EP is really me and because of it, it’s some of the best work I’ve ever done.

Mister Nik Sharp’s 6 song EP, “Let’s Give it to the Girls” is available now on iTunes and Amazon.

Q&A with Nik Sharp

Who inspired you to get into music?

When I was a kid there was a Palm Harbor Florida band (where I'm from) called For Squirrels. They were signed to Sony and a majority of them died in a tragic tour bus accident a few months before there record came out. Their story made me pick up a guitar.
