TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA/AP)- Civilian employees at MacDill Air Force Base will begin taking unpaid days off as part of a department of defense program to cut costs.
3,500 civilian employees will be required to take 11 furlough days between Monday and the end of September.
The federal government estimates MacDill employees will lose $8 million collectively in wages.
Civilian employees were slated to take 22 days without pay when the furloughs were first proposed, but that number was later cut in half.
In a statement, MacDill base Commander Col. Scott Dethomas said the lost wages will add stress to the lives of the employees and their families.
