Department of Edu revives Bright Futures probe

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education is reviving an investigation into Florida's bright futures scholarship program.

The Miami Herald reports (http://hrld.us/1f6pbff) the probe could fuel long-simmering complaints about the popular program's fairness.

An outsized share of the more than $4 billion in scholarships has gone to white or affluent families since the program's inception. Some of those recipients came from families that were wealthy enough to pay for college without any help.

Standards to obtain one of the scholarships have risen in recent years. Critics say this will only exclude more poor and minority students.

The Department's Office of Civil Rights acknowledged it had requested information about bright futures from some districts last year.

State Rep. Erik Fresen says the program is unbiased and based on merit.
